Summer programs bolster reading, literacy skills

Several programs and activities aimed at making every child a reader, enhancing reading competencies, and promoting love for reading were conducted in the summer of 2016.

The Summer Reading Camp Across All Learning Areas with the theme, “I Can Read and Play”, was conducted from April 14 to 27 by all elementary schools in the Division targeting both abled and struggling readers. The camp activities were all play and games-based, and Longos Elementary School was declared as the best implementer.

All elementary English school reading coordinators and department heads, meanwhile, participated in the Training-Workshop on Intensifying Leadership in Reading Program Implementation held from May 24 to 26 at the SDO Conference Hall. The said training is the first phase of the L2 (second language) Reading Program under the Malabon Readster 2016.

The above reading programs are also hoped to be strengthened through the implementation of the Early Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (ELLAN) which is targeted at improving the reading and numeracy skills of Kinder to Grade 3 pupils. Teachers for Kindergarten, English, Mathematics, and Filipino for the said grade levels took part in the Training of Teachers held on May 11 at the SDO Conference Hall, May 12, 13, and 16 at Longos ES, and May 17 at Ninoy Aquino ES.

The Learning Resource Management and Development Unit also spearheaded the validation of reading-based supplementary materials on March 17, 2016. –hrb
